muscle building workout for seniors

Start the new year STRONG with this 20 minute senior muscle building workout!

It will target multiple muscle groups to help you maintain muscle mass, burn added calories, and remain independent which is so important for our age group.

Knowing what the different muscles do is vital to understanding  why we need to keep doing strength training and in helping us stay motivated to continue working them.

So let’s take a look at the muscles we’ll be working.

BICEPS assist in moving the elbow and are so very important in lifting and moving heavy objects. Think carrying grocery bags, picking up objects, holding your grandchild and mowing the lawn.

TRICEPS are necessary for overhead tasks such as putting objects in an upper cabinet, putting your carry-on in the overhead bin, washing and styling your hair. And who doesn’t want to keep those underarms toned?

DELTOIDS cover the shoulders and aid in moving the arms away from the body as in opening a door, swimming, tossing or hitting a ball, or lugging your heavy suitcase behind you.

QUADS need to be strong to get us out of our chair, in and out of the car, for climbing stairs, and for walking and running. Also, if your quads are strong, they take less work off of the knees, helping to avoid injury.

HIP MUSCLES help with good mobility and stability playing into maintaining good balance and easier side movement. If the muscles around the hips are strong, they help protect the hips in case of a fall. Hip fractures are not uncommon in our age group.

STRONG MUSCLES MAKE FOR STRONG BONES! Bye bye, osteoporosis.

When we do a muscle building workout, the muscles pull on the bones, creating a sort of tug of war that forces the body to strengthen the bones.

The less active we are, the weaker the muscles and bones become giving in to less mobility and more frailty.

The good news is that it only takes 15 to 20 minutes a couple of times a week to maintain or even improve your strength.

So, get started or continue ensuring that you can remain independent and enjoy these later years.
