These sciatica exercises will help relieve sciatica pain, which can range from mildly annoying to downright debilitating.
What Is Sciatica Pain?
Sciatica is pain that can travel along the sciatica nerve from your hip all the way down to your heel.
The sciatica nerve is the longest nerve in your body and, if irritated, can cause numbness, tingling and/or pain down the back of your leg.
It generally affects only one leg or side of the body.
What Causes Sciatica Nerve Pain?
There are a number of possible sciatica causes:
A herniated disc
A slipped or ruptured disc in the lower spine can press on the sciatic nerve, causing pain
Spinal stenosis
Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal canal.
When this happens, it can put pressure on the nerve, leading to sciatica symptoms.
Arthritis
Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis in the spine, can contribute to sciatica by damaging the cushioning discs and cartilage.
This can irritate or compress the sciatic nerve.
Bone spur
Bone spurs are tiny, jagged edges that form along our bones.
Much like osteoarthritis, they can cause irritation to the sciatic nerve.
Tight piriformis, hamstrings, quads, or calves
Tight muscles can become inflamed and cause us to position our body in unnatural ways, causing sciatic discomfort (try these stretches to help!).
Prolonged sitting
Sitting for hours, especially with bad posture, can trigger sciatica.
Injury
A traumatic injury, like a car accident or fall, can impact the spine and the sciatic nerve.
There are other causes, but these are the most common.
Whatever the cause, it can be painful and frustrating.
Why Do Sciatica Exercises?
Most sciatica pain will resolve within a few days or a week, especially if you are diligently doing your sciatica exercises.
If not, or if the pain becomes intense, it may be time for a visit to the doctor to attack the underlying cause.
In the meantime, try some of these exercises and stretches throughout your day to see if you can ease some of that pain.
For best results, work on them consistently several times per week.
I hope with the help of these exercises you will find some sciatica pain relief!
